3 Ways to Freshen Your Space | Brazos Valley Photographer

While spending more time at home – perhaps it has sparked a desire in you to freshen up your space… I hear you! However, HOW do you renew and revitalize your home when going out and buying new pieces isn’t an option?! What do you do when you can’t hop to Kirklands, Target, or any of our amazing local small business friends to get new vase or frame or smell those new candles?!

Below are my top 3 ways to give your home a new feel – without ever leaving it!

#1: PLAY MUSICAL CHAIRS AND TABLES

Look around your house and identify small pieces of furniture, such as chairs and small side tables. Consider ways to use them in different areas of your home. A skinny hallway table can be great behind a couch that has an open back to another room. That beautiful upholstered chair in your bedroom that only has your purse (and maybe a stack of laundry!) in it could be exactly what your living room has been needing! Don’t be afraid to try it out and after a few days, move it again! I have even known families who have completely removed their coffee table out of a room for a time to give more space to sit and play with their little ones… this is all about making the current pieces you have work in your home for your family!

#2: MAKE NEW “COLLECTIONS” OF THINGS

Gather small decor items together from the different rooms in your house and put them on your dining room table. Think plants (real or fake!), photos, tabletop decor, and sentimental items. Look to find ways to group items together that you haven’t done before.

 A few tips:

  • Try putting items together by color. For this – don’t be afraid to paint a frame or two, or even use some spray paint on small decor pieces to give them a totally new look! Pinterest is always a great resource on how to’s and tips on using the right kind of paint!
  • Gather items in opposite numbers. Did you know – when you see a group of items together, it is more visually appealing if it is not an even number of things? It’s true!
  • Don’t forget your walls! This isn’t just for table tops and bookshelves! Do the same thing with wall art and decor. Not sure what to do with those photos? Contact me! I love helping clients and friends figure out how to arrange their wall art in their homes and would love to find a time to chat about a space you are struggling with.

#3: CREATE FUN SPACES THAT ENCOURAGE TIME TOGETHER

Is there an unused small corner in your family room? Add a few throw pillows and a small basket of books to create a reading corner for your kids! Consider facing the couches/chairs in a new way that encourages conversation instead of just all facing the tv. You might be surprised at how it invites people to come sit and chat! Toss a cozy blanket and some cute throw pillows (Target can totally hook you up with some cute ones if you want to splurge… and HOORAY curbside pick up!) and you’ve got a whole new space to enjoy with the people you love most.

The most important part of any of this is making sure it works for you and your family! One of the things our staff constantly works towards is remembering that every family is different and has unique needs when it comes to what they are looking for in a session. As you are looking through images and reading posts about what you think you want in your home – remember that what works for others may not be exactly what you need – and I am here to cheer you on as you create a cozy and loving place for those you love the most! ❤️
