In my 9+ years as a newborn and family photographer here in the Brazos Valley, I’ve learned a few things about taking photos with kids. While we all image a family session with kids who are dressed perfectly, smiling their best, and listening to every word we say… the reality is that kids will be kids!
Just like adults, kids have mad days, sad days, and just-want-to-lay-in-bed days, and that means that sometimes picture day and a rough day just happen on the SAME day.
Below are some of my favorite tips for helping your kids understand and be set up for success on your family photo day!
1: EXPLAIN THE PROCESS
Are you someone who likes to know the plan and be prepared? Chances are, you may have a kiddo who is the same way! Instead of springing family photos on them a couple days before, start talking about it as soon as you book! Let them know where you’ll be going, how long the session will be, and what is expected of them! Our studio is known for our efficient and detailed explanations of what our process is – we know that the better informed you are, the easier the day and more relaxed you’ll be!
2. GET THEM INVOLVED
Now, I always suggest Mom be in charge of coordinating outfits, but find ways to let your kids participate! If you have girls, let them have some input into a special necklace they could wear or what color bow would work in their hair. For older kids – show them different family photos on our website and Pinterest boards and see if there’s a pose they really like for their individual photo. Communicate with us as well if there is something they like or don’t like, I know that the teenage years can come with lots of feelings and I want them to feel comfortable
3. FOR JUST ONE DAY – BRIBERY IS ALLOWED
Picture day is not the day for grounding and fussing. I know… everyone can feel a little tense, but just remember to breathe! It’s also ok to offer a favorite snack or candy treat after the session! (Our favorite treats to offer are smarties and glow sticks!)
BONUS TIP: One of the best things you can do is RELAX! Chances are if you are relaxed and easy going, your kids will follow along. Know that if your kiddos are fussy or not super enthusiastic, it’s not a reflection on you as a parent and that I have a few tricks up my sleeve to get those smiles to show up!
